Happy End of 2013 and Start of 2014!

Christmas Recap

This is the short version of our Christmas--Maya enjoying some music on her new cell phone. A good portion of her day involved adding people to her contacts list, sending texts, and downloading games, music, and apps.
We also managed to squeeze a visit from my mom to join us for lunch and the movie Grudge Match into our day. Maya and I are at the movie theater in the photo above.

We had dinner and a gift exchange with my best friend and her daughter on Christmas Eve. Then we drove around to look at pretty light displays like this one.
A very nice, relaxing holiday on our end. Hope the same holds true for you!

Merry Christmas!

If you celebrate, I hope you and those you love are having a wonderful Christmas.

Here are some of my favorite quotes related to Christmas, giving, peace, dark humor, etc.

“The greatest good you can do for another is not just share your riches, but reveal to them their own.”  ~~Disraeli

"Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas."  ~~Calvin Coolidge

"Orphans, dead parents, lonely children at Christmas, morose spoken word recordings, everything you love about the holidays. Move the turkey over so you can fit your head in the oven."  ~~April Winchell

"The main reason Santa is so jolly is because he knows where all the bad girls live."  ~~George Carlin

"Unless we make Christmas an occasion to share our blessings, all the snow in Alaska won't make it 'white.'"  ~~Bing Crosby

“Develop an attitude of gratitude, and give thanks for e…

Recent Reads

Joyland by Stephen King (2013).  Dev is a young man working at a carnival in the early 1970s, and, as often happens, the girl he likes is into someone else.  Sounds like a pretty regular story, right?  Well, this is Stephen King telling the story.  Throw in a serial killer, a ghost, and just the intriguing setting of the carnival, and you have an interesting story.  [Full disclosure--I borrowed this book from my local public library.]

The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes (2011).  During the first part of the book, first-person narrator Tony is looking back on his youth from forty years ahead.  We learn all about his friendships and his first love.  During the remainder of the book, his present and his past collide, leaving him to realize the truth about his past isn't quite as he always believed.  As always, Barnes has the perfect touch, yet the story is incredibly sad.  I can't help thinking this book exemplifies the Lauren Oliver quote, "Take it from me: If you hear t…

Fun Day--12/14/2013

I won two tickets to the Nebraska-Creighton women's basketball game at work. Maya and I had a great day downtown.
The view of Memorial Stadium from inside the arena.
Maya and I had seats two rows behind the Nebraska team.
View of the Pinnacle Bank Area from our parking garage.
Lunch after the game at The Green Gateau included make-your-own s'mores for dessert.

Muffin--Before and After

Muffin after yesterday's groom.  We can see her pretty eyes again.

Incoming Mail--Tami

Isn't this envelope decoration beautiful?  The letter came from Tami in Oregon of A Mother's Musings.

Incoming Mail--Michele

Cute Papyrus card from my sister. While technically a Christmas card, she's using them as notecards.
And a belated happy birthday to Michele, who celebrated yesterday.
