Incoming Mail--Michele

A couple of postcards from my sister, Michele, during their visit to Steamboat Springs, Colorado, this past week.

Pizza & Pool Party--June 26, 2013

Fun times at Maya's pizza and pool party for Girl Scouts on Wednesday.  Photos courtesy of one of the troop leaders, as I had the chance for dinner and adult conversation with my best friend while Maya spent time with her friends.

Incoming Mail--Alison/LEP Swap

The LEP May swap consisted of exchanging a set of Dear Diary/Journal items with a partner.  My partner, Alison in South Africa, sent a set of colored entries to be opened based on the order of the colors in the rainbow. Creative, cool, fun way to complete the swap.

Incoming Mail--Becky

Postcard of the Columbia River Gorge from Becky in Oregon. Beautiful!

Incoming Mail--Michele

Card and letter from Michele, my sister in New Mexico. The girls are supposed to represent my sisters and me. I'm the one in the purple skirt, my sister in Iowa (Laura) is in the middle, and Michele is the blonde on the end. Cute!

Incoming Mail--Sue

Card from Sue in North Carolina.

Some of My Favorite Tony Soprano Quotes

In memory of James Gandolfini.
"A wrong decision is better than indecision."
"Even a broken clock is right twice a day."
"You're only religious when it suits you."
[to Dr. Melfi] "Mother of Christ. Is this a woman thing? You ask me how I'm feeling. I tell you how I'm feeling, and now you're going to torture me with it."
[to his mother] "You know, everyone thought Dad was the ruthless one. But I got to hand it to you, if you were born after those feminists, you would have been the real gangster."
"Maybe being a rebel in my family would have been selling patio furniture on Route 22."

Maya's Birthday Party--June 15, 2013

Maya's Ninth Birthday Today!

Opening presents at Grandma's house this morning.
Our celebrations include a skating party with her friends this afternoon and dinner at the restaurant of Maya's choice tonight.
This is her last year in the single digits!

Pioneers Park--June 9, 2013

While Maya enjoyed her afternoon hike for a Girl Scouts' program related to water wonders, I enjoyed sitting on the porch of the Pioneers Park Nature Center, which is celebrating fifty years in 2013.

The photo is my view from the porch.  I had a pleasant, peace-filled view and beautiful weather while I wrote a letter to my sister and read an ebook.  The park is about thirty minutes from our house, so not quite close enough to leave Maya just to come back to get her later.  Poor me--I just *had* to stay to do fun, relaxing stuff while she made her trek through the park with their guide and the other girls.

I can't wait to return for additional sessions in July and August.  I might be slightly more excited than Maya, even!

Recent Reads

The Yellow Birds by Kevin Powers (2012).  Highly recommended.  The author spent 2004-2005 serving in Iraq, and his novel makes for compelling, dark reading.  The story revolves around two young soldiers, as told from the viewpoint of the one who physically comes home.

The Things that Make Me Give In by Charlotte Stein (2010).  Recommended.  Collection of short, erotic vignettes.  I'm still keeping Sheltered as my favorite work by Stein.

After Math by Denise Grover Swank (2013).  Recommended.  Scarlett is essentially blackmailed into becoming an algebra tutor for athlete (soccer) Tucker.  Broken in different ways, they come together to form a special relationship.

The Nerd and the Marine by D. R. Grady (2011).  The Morrison Family series.  Not recommended.  Story about a couple who meets through the exchange of e-mails when Lainey fosters Mitch's dog while he's deployed.  There is just too much time spent on the period before they meet, and then a very quick wrap on the book …

Job Update

I received my rejection voicemail for the Omaha job this afternoon.  Even though I felt pretty certain after interviewing that I didn't really want the job, I'm still disappointed--a surprising very disappointed.
Rejection burns, either way, I guess.
Thanks for the good luck wishes you sent my direction.

UNL's Dairy Store--June 1, 2013

Fun stop at the UNL (University of Nebraska-Lincoln) Dairy Store on East Campus.  Maya enjoyed her Scarlet & Cream (strawberry ice cream with a ribbon of strawberry jam) waffle cone.
East Campus is beautiful.  Lots of trees and flowers, and even a gazebo where weddings are sometimes held.
Becky, I always think of you and our time working together at Schmid Law Library when I visit East Campus.
Hope you're having a good weekend.
