Photo from my goddaughter Shon's trip to Chadron, Nebraska, last week. Beautiful!

While the Cat is Away

Maya and my mom spent a few days in Iowa with my sister and her "kids."  My nephew, Andrew, and niece, Liz, are 24 and 20, respectively, so not such "kids" these days.  They're the perfect ages to completely spoil Maya, though.
While the cat was away, the mice did play.
Besides going out with my best friend a couple of times, I also had a date night with Herb on Wednesday.

It's always nice to have a chance for some "adult time," though I'm glad to have Maya back at home now.  I miss my girl when she's gone!

Christmas Day 2013

Merry Christmas!

Wishing a day filled with family and all that you consider merry to everyone celebrating Christmas.

Incoming Mail

Postcard from Becky in Oregon during a visit to Florida for family reasons.
A Postcrossing card from the Ukraine.
A Postcrossing card from Moldova.  Perfect timing since this arrived during our first real snow of the season where I live.
Christmas Robin by Richard Wood from my mom for Maya.
One of the Penguin Books postcards from Dana in North Carolina of Save Snail Mail.
Dana sent the postcard as a Happy 12/12/12 greeting.  Why didn't I think of doing that??

Snow Day Happiness

Maya's thrilled to have her first snow day of third grade today.  I imagine the local high school students are even more excited because this is finals week for first semester.  I say my usual "bah, snow, ice, and lousy roads--and white Christmases are over-rated."  Seeing Maya enjoy the snow is pretty fun, though!

Recent Reads

BookBub recommendation.  My friend Kym suggested this site to me, and I find at least two or three free books to download every week from the daily messages.  To quote from their site:

"BookBub is a free email newsletter that keeps you updated about deeply discounted and free digital books. You choose the types of books you'd like to get notified about -- with categories ranging from mysteries to cookbooks -- and we send the best deals in those genres to your inbox."
Fan fiction for The Walking Dead.  With TWD t.v. series on hiatus until season three resumes in February 2013, I'm feeding my fixation with exploring the available fan fiction.  I'm really enjoying seeing where others take the story and characters, though I might not want to admit how many late-night hours I'm spending browsing and reading.

Marco's Redemption by Lynda Chance (2012)--Romance.  Chance is one of my favorite authors for the Alpha male/slightly shy female, and I pretty much stalk A…

This and That

Maya with knitted Christmas tree decorations at Grandma's house.  Grandma did the work, but Maya's now getting interested in learning to knit.  Photo taken by my mom one day last week.
How was your weekend?  Saturday brought a fun lunch at Cheddar's with my best friend, a quick stop at Shopko, and part of the afternoon at my mom's house.  Sunday turned into a day at home because Maya has a case of the sniffles.  She went to school today, though, very relieved that she isn't missing any of her last week before the two-week (too long) winter break.
I'm very relieved that I'm done with my holiday and birthday shopping for my sisters.  With their birthdays falling on December 14 and January 5, there's an extra shopping challenge with them.  I just need a few stocking stuffers for Maya and a trip to the post office to mail some gifts, and then I'm officially done with the materialistic side of Christmas.  Happy dance.
Well, we still don't have our t…

Weekend Update

A little Muffin eye candy.  That dog knows how to nest and cuddle.  Photo taken by Maya.
We braved the mall for some shopping at Justice, Maya's favorite clothing store, on Saturday morning.
This is the outfit she wore to school today.
Although we didn't do any inside decorating, I did get my photo cards in this morning's mail.  I also did a little gift wrapping, which isn't something I enjoy.  I read a good tip about wrapping as you buy instead of waiting to wrap everything at once and feeling overwhelmed.
Hope you had a great weekend!

Looking a Little Like Christmas

Herb gets the credit for having the outside of our house looking festive.  Notice that Maya and I haven't removed the pumpkins and sunflower/autumn flag from our porch yet, though.

The goal for this weekend is to get the inside of our house decorated and holiday cards in the mail.  I haven't started on either one yet, so I think that's goal enough for our weekend.

Hope you have a great weekend planned!

Outgoing Mail

Some postcards Herb brought back from his October trip to Hampton, Virginia.  I had a hard time letting these go, especially as Colonial Williamsburg is in one of my top slots for places I want to visit.
Forget visiting.  That little house makes me want to pack and move right now!
The Historic Triangle consists of Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown.
I can imagine Maya wanting to go on a carriage ride.
The Royal Governor's Palace, The Courthouse of 1770, and The Capitol.
 Virginia State Capitol in Richmond.
Burruss Hall at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.

Thanksgiving Weekend--November 22-25, 2012

I'm so glad Maya loves to read just as much as I do.
Chocolate cream pie--yum!  Foods are all calorie-free at the holidays, right??
 And yet more reading.
Shopping with Maya.  I told Maya I would buy her heels if (a) she could walk in them and (b) she understood she won't be wearing them to school.  She walks in heels better than I do, by far. . . .
Did I mention we spent a lot of time reading?
