Incoming Mail, June 21-26, 2012

Cute washi tape on the envelope of a letter from Ellen in The Netherlands.  We "met" through Postcrossing several years ago.  She sent a letter filled with photos, scenic and personal.  I really like Dutch windmills, probably because they remind me of my grandparents and their farm with the American windmill, and Ellen included a photo of one near her home.  Lovely!
Gorgeous stamp on a Postcrossing postcard from Finland.
Card with fun inserts from Les in Maine.  Which is cuter--the Mary Engelbreit design with the girl on the reindeer or the lobster on the return address label?  I say a tie.
First-time letter from So-Jin in England.  I'm looking forward to getting to know her better.  Have you ever seen prettier handwriting?  The paper is from France, and fine to the point of distraction.

Maya sent this Missouri postcard while on her journey to Huntsville, Alabama, for the family reunion. Start them young on the addiction to mail. . . .

Mail for Miette

Miette, a little girl who has DIPG, diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma, an inoperable brain stem tumor that progresses rapidly, has a goal--mail, lots and lots of mail.  Can you help with brightening Miette's day a little by sending a card, letter, postcard, or drawing?

Her mailing address:

Miette's Journey (or just Miette)
P.O. Box 2134
Brighton QLD 4017

Please visit Miette's Journey, a heartfelt blog written by her mother, for more information.

Incoming Mail--June 14-21, 2012

Beautiful, colorful postcard from Claudia in California of Moncy3.  She also has a free shipping special going on with her Etsy shops right now, so have a look.
Letter from Dana in North Carolina of Save Snail Mail.  She used stationery with tear-off quotes along the bottom, as shown in the photo.  This quote is from Eleanor Roosevelt--"Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only true friends will leave footprints in your heart."

Multi-view postcard of Pittsburgh from Postcrossing.  I always like receiving postcards that show somewhere I've never visited.
Postcrossing card from Australia.  The sender met the photographer, Warren Keelan, and he was excited to hear her plans for sending his postcards around the world.

One of my favorite regular reads--The Sun Magazine. "Personal. Political. Provocative. Ad-free."

This and That

My goddaughter, Shon, snapped this group of wild peacocks just outside of Lincoln.  Aren't they lovely?  [Thanks for letting me post your photo, Shon!]

Although I'm just getting started with posting my mail to this blog, I'm already making changes.  I'm going to attempt to post every piece of incoming mail, but I decided to only post some of the outgoing mail, including first-time postcards and cards.

I'm also changing the way I blog about books.  You may have noticed no recent blog postings about books, but don't think that means I'm not reading.  That pretty much means I'm burned out on writing book posts.  Instead, I'm going to write infrequent book posts with short comments about multiple books.  I think--we'll see how that goes once I get started.

Your thoughts are always appreciated about blog changes.

Maya left for Alabama yesterday with my mom, my sisters, and my nieces.  This is Maya's first road trip longer than three hours.  She …

The Haymarket--June 19, 2012

Maya gets an incredible number of compliments on this shirt.
Michele, my sister from New Mexico, arrived in Lincoln late Sunday night.  As part of keeping her entertained, Maya and I spent yesterday evening with her in the Historic Haymarket.  We ate dinner at my favorite restaurant, Vincenzo's Ristorante, savored the ice cream at Ivanna Cone, and shopped at Indigo Bridge Books and From Nebraska Gift Shop.
If anyone wants a Nebraska postcard, let me know.  I'm not even going to admit how many I bought at From Nebraska!

Maya's Birthday--June 15, 2012

Maya waiting for her strawberry Belgian waffle breakfast at Perkins.
Maya feeding cat food to the koi at Granite City after lunch.
The koi enjoying their snack.
I'm glad I decided to take a vacation day from work because we had so much fun just hanging out on Maya's birthday.  Besides breakfast and lunch, we went to Target, spent a couple of hours with my mom at her house, and ate dinner at Outback with Herb, my best friend/Maya's godmother, Keli, and my goddaughter/Maya's godsister, Shon.
And now my "baby" is eight!!

Maya the Birthday Queen!

Today is Maya's eighth birthday. I have the day off work to spend with her. Plans include breakfast, lunch, and dinner out, trips to Target and Barnes & Noble, and whatever else comes to mind.

Should be a fun day!

Outgoing Mail--June 6-10, 2012

This is a work-in-progress, so please share your thoughts on ways I can improve sharing my incoming and outgoing mail with you.  I'm very open to suggestions.  I already decided I won't be taking photos with the tablecloth in place--too distracting for a background.  Anything else annoying?

Mail to Wanda in Canada,* my sister Michele in New Mexico, stack of Vegas postcards for Joel in Arizona,** and a Chicago postcard for my sailor e-pal. [Maya made the cool bookmark at the top in daycare, and she just let me borrow the bookmark for the photo!]
Postcard for Postcrossing, stamps for Wanda in Canada, letter to Penny in Canada, letter to Dana in North Carolina of Save Snail Mail, card to Keli in Lincoln, letter to Tami in Oregon of A Mother's Musings, and card to Penny in Canada.

More postcards for Postcrossing and letters to Dmitry in Russia and Birte in Germany.

Joslyn Art Museum--May 27, 2012

We visited the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska, about an hour from our home by car, on May 27.  We originally visited to see the special Egyptian exhibit on loan from the Brooklyn Museum, though we found the actual exhibit a little underwhelming.  As Herb said, we'll probably never get to Egypt, though, so we're glad we had the opportunity.
They didn't allow photography in the special exhibit, so here is some of the permanent collection:

The tiled fountain is Maya's favorite part of the Joslyn.
Cirium by Kenneth Noland, 1964--One of Maya's favorite pieces.
Morning Tree by Pat Steir, 1983--Another of Maya's favorites.
The Pearl of Venice by Thomas Moran, 1899--My favorite piece in the entire collection.
Punch bowl from 1893--Maya likes the bling.
The Battle of Imbros by Giovanni Raggi, 1717--One of Herb's favorites from the collection.
Chihuly: Inside and Out by Dale Chihuly--You can also see part of the sculpture garden and Omaha Central High S…

Hot Rod Super Nationals--May 26, 2012

I'm on a mission to get Maya and me to more places and events held in or near where we live (Lincoln, Nebraska, middle of the United States), especially during the decent driving weather of the spring and summer months.  Our own, ongoing "staycation."

We braved the heat (97 degrees F/36.11 degrees C) and humidity on May 26 to attend the Hot Rod Super Nationals, conveniently held near our home.  For your viewing pleasure:

"What do you mean my lips are blue?  Do you just want to take another picture of me?"  [Do you think maybe I request too many photo ops from Maya??]

Maya's favorite car at the show.  Wouldn't she look cute driving around in a pink car?

My favorite car at the show.  Really, they were all beautiful, and we had a great time looking.

Package Pals--Deadline June 10, 2012

Shannah, with a lovely blog over at Write Before Your Eyes, is holding a package exchange.  Here are the details, as copied directly from her post.

Be sure to read this thoroughly!!

Many bloggers have this going right now, so I thought I'd host one as well. I'm calling it Package Pals.

So, it's basically a project where, if you want to participate, you get assigned a partner that you send a package to. What you do once you get assigned a partner is basically stalk their blog and find out their interests. Maybe send them an e-mail or two (but do NOT tell them you are their package pal!) Once you discover some things they like, you send them a package. It doesn't have to be too expensive, and it can even be nice handmade gifts. Make it interesting and thoughtful though!

If you'd like to participate, send me an email titled "Package Pal" telling me you'd like to participate. Send me your name and current mailing address so that I may find you a package p…
